What's in a blog name?

So I caved. Actually, “caved” isn’t the right word. I’ve been thinking about doing a blog for almost a year now. I just didn’t know if I’d ever have enough to write about. I figured, if I’m going to have a blog, I want to write in it enough to make it worth reading. So I started keeping track of things I want to write about, and I’ll give the whole blogging thing a shot.
First off, what’s with the word “blog?” I understand that it is short for “web-log,” but the first time I heard it, I honestly thought they called it a blog because that is the sound you make when you word-vomit. Let’s be honest, what is a blog besides a place for people to word vomit?
I like reading people’s blog more than I like looking at people’s facebook profiles. I don’t get on facebook hardly ever these days. I betcha my average time spent on facebook is five minutes every two or three weeks. In a blog you get to see more of who a person is through their writing. Much more powerful and much more worthy of people’s time.
One more thing. Creating a title for your blog is intimidating. I’ve just spent the last half hour trying to come up with one. Coming up with a blog title is akin to etching your name in stone. It will be there forever. I tried lots of titles and addresses, all of which were taken.

Finally I decided on August Flux. August is my middle name and the name of my mother's father. Flux is synonymous with "Rush" and it reminds me of "flux capacitor," the instrument that makes time travel possible (invented by Emmett L. Brown on Nov 5, 1955).  I must mention that I did look at Dave Barry’s list of good rock band names for inspiration, though (http://www.davebarry.com/rockbandlist.html). I was about to call the site The Federal Duck after Dave Barry’s college band.
Enjoy.

  1. I'm glad that you decided to start a blog! I agree with you that blogs are much more interesting than Facebook. I couldn't care less about mafia wars and which vampires are eating each other.
